See NASA Special Publications, Atlas of Comet Halley (1987) M. Halleys comet was last seen in our skies in 1986 and only circles back every 76 years or so, but it left behind a long trail of ancient dust, which we pass. Japan, the European Space Agency, and the USSR sent spacecraft to study the comet the Vega and Giotto probes revealed a darker-than-expected nucleus 8 km (5 mi) wide and 15 km (9 mi) long, and shaped like a potato. Receiving a worldwide release in 1986, Halleys Comet is a vertically scrolling shooter where the player defends various planets around the Solar System from a direct collision with Halleys Comet and the various alien swarms which accompany it. A massive observing effort (1982–89) including visual observations, photography, and studies of the area around the nucleus, was coordinated by the International Halley Watch. For its most recent return in 19, astronomers observed it from the ground and from space. It reappeared in 1835 when it was carefully recorded by visual observers, and in 1910, when its long tail and outbursts of dust jets were observed photographically. Halley did not live to see its return in 1758, close to the time he predicted. The comet, officially called 1P/Halley, is named after English astronomer Edmond Halley, who examined reports of a comet approaching Earth in 1531, 16. As Halleys comet arrived near the Sun in 1986 on its 76-year orbit, it was met by spacecraft from Japan, Europe, and the USSR. ![]() Halley's comet or Comet Halley hăl´ē, hā´lē, periodic comet named for Edmond Halley, who observed it in 1682 and identified it as the one observed in 15.
